Leeches and Vampires!

Lost time is never found again. -Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) One of the founding fathers of the United States of America.

As I write this, I have just completed a fantastic day of training my real estate clients and feel inspired by their passion to challenge themselves and learn more! During a particular exercise, they were all asked what is the biggest challenge they face on a day to day basis…and according to the majority…time management!

How could that be? With all of the obstacles and hurdles each day, why do we struggle so much with how to deal with the onslaught of time. I think the basic problem is that we have an inaccurate perception that we can control time at all. Really…think about it…manage time…impossible! It just keeps on rolling along regardless of what we do with it!

The truth is that the best we can hope for is that we block our usage of that time to pursue our dreams…yet that also seems to be an idealistic pipe dream. You see most of us are simply frustrated with what we do with time!

Consider the saying “time flies.” Does it really though? Many people with children can’t even imagine where the time went, yet ironically when they were getting up in the middle of the night to change diaper after diaper, I guarantee you they willed time along to just get out of that stage.

The heart of the matter again can be found within what it is that we really want out of the limited time we have, because to us time really is a limited resource. Most people never block even a little bit of that time to sit still and ask themselves what is it that they really want out of the several areas of balance in life.

They cry I want more money, but did they ever first plan out how much time they would need to spend earning it and then more importantly how they would save a portion of it? They say I wished I had more time with my spouse and kids, but did they ever take the time to plan a simple family outing or some alone time with loved ones? They say I’m lonely, but did they ever take the time to venture out to meet new people in a new setting? Or even worse they become depressed by the fact that time seems to have played the thief and stolen all of their greatest opportunities…but was it really time that was the thief??

The fact is that time doesn’t know any better…it just does its thing…it keeps on rolling! So stop giving it so much credit, instead beware the time vampires and leeches! That’s right, they’re everywhere! They come dressed in all different disguises…friends with nothing better to do than chomp on your ear, colleagues with any agenda other than work, television sucking the brain out of your skull and brainwashing you to follow someone elses agenda…but worst of all: YOU!

That’s right…it’s not Father Time at all that’s guilty…it’s you! Of course we are all given a time allotment when our life begins…some more than others but that can be rendered irrelevant by what you do with it! How many great people have we lost way too young whose accomplishments are only the dreams of many lifetimes!

The real problem is that we just waste so much of this precious commodity chasing our tails, never really taking the time to simply figure out what we actually would prefer to do with our time! Instead we’ll look in the rearview mirror and blame anything and everything for our misuse of our portion!

But there’s hope and don’t offer some lip service that you’re too old for this! I have heard the story of an alcoholic who cleaned themself up in their seventies to go on to enjoy the greatest final 24 months of their life! But please don’t wait for a major catastrophic life event to wake you up! Why do we have to get so beaten up before we realize that we need to block out our time to serve us when it’s just so simple! Maybe it’s because we take it for granted until we’re sure ours is almost up!

There are several easy steps to getting rid of the time gremlins! Step 1: take a personal inventory of what’s important to you in all areas of your life but especially Financial, Family, Physical and Social…we simply need to take care of those basic needs or we are forever off base. Be as clear and as specific as you can be about this! Step 2: put together an ideal week that includes time blocks for everything that you have written down in Step 1. Hello! This is the stuff that you delcared most important so why wouldn’t you have a plan as to how much time you need each day, each week to get what you want?

Once you have this “ideal week” both written and mentally in place, you will have built, in essence, your “wooden stake” that you can drive through the heart of the time vampires and leeches! How? Easily! You see the clarity you’ll receive from focusing on your written goals will begin to automatically eliminate the “noise.” What noise you say? Anybody or anything that interferes with what you really want to do…need to do with your time!

So it’s time to step up and understand that time thieves come in all shapes and sizes but no bigger thief than you yourself! If you swim headlong into Father Time, he will crush you…not because he doesn’t want you to have all of your dreams fulfilled, but simply because you didn’t play his game! So instead, just grab your surfboard and catch the wave! You just go ahead and ride your time right over those leeches and vampires straight to your hearts desires! Remember: Your Life = Your Time…make the best of it!

Hi Danny, Sounds like the conferance is going well. Wish I was there. This is one of wisdom nugget that needs constant reminding to help us get back on track when we have drifted, and drifting is what we do despite our best intentions.

How true. Only we can control and shape our destiny. With children, I haven’t mastered the concept which I well mastered without them. It’s a constant battle. I also learned long ago that those people who do not add to one’s life needn’t be part of it. They will suck out your energy and time.

    Danny,
Great thoughts Danny as usual, your energy is infectious and I love it. I have taught Time Management courses and I have learned you can not manage time just as you state. It keeps moving no matter what you do. I tell people it’s not time we have to manage but our activities. Also, having balance with our activities is important but most of us have no means to see and observe that balance. We have a calendar at work for our work stuff, one on the refrigerator for our family stuff and the printed calendar from our church or other organizations for those activities. Some times they overlap with very confusing results. I believe people need to have an automated system, a contact management tool they use for all facets of their life, color code it so at a glance you can see if your in balance or not. The next thing is we need to develop a vertical alignment of priorities based on our mission, or our plan. We should have multiple missions as well; one for work, one for a father/husband/wife/mother and one for our personal well being. All of these are activities that should be vertically aligned, as it is harder to move things up or down, verses a horizontal line which makes it easy to change priorities and move things around. It starts with setting a mission statement and then scheduling activities that direct you to that mission. So at any time you can ask your self “is what I’m doing NOW getting me closer or farther away from my mission”. If it’s getting you closer continue, if it’s not stop doing it, period. Also the bottom line is this. You can’t have decision constipation. You need to be doing something, not even God can start a parked car. In closing, all I can say is FIGHT ON.

Thank you, Danny. I am guilty fo how I use my time..wisely. I have set my ideal week but, allow distractions to waste it. I appreciate the reminders and the spirit of discipline is always rewarded.

I have been training management teams and coaching executives for over 20 years on this very subject. These points are “bang on”. The simple matter is that as human beings in our roles as managers, leaders, fathers, mothers, friends, etc., we want to get every minute to count…to be the most meaningful. To do this we begin to act immediately without pausing to think…what is most important today. What will, when accomplished, point me in the direction of achieving my ultimate goals if live. The big ones, the ones that really matter. So as we wake up everyday and begin our concious life what do we do? Whatever screams at us the loudest. Do what Danny urges. Have your weekely plan. Make sure it supports your monthly, quarterly and yearly goals that untlimatley lead to your big goals. Wake up, grab your map and follow it to your daily accomplishment. Feel how good it really does feel to get to the end of your journey and know you are on your way to achieving your big goals.

Easier said than done….yes indeed. But we all can do it.

What great timing of this blog…this past week has me spinning with loss of time!! The Real Estate Market is much more active now with all the pent-up buyers over the winter months hiding and staying warm. They are all out at once and demanding my time – I need to be good at managing my time to make the best of my day – lost time is lost deals – lost deals is lost income!!! Very easy to get distracted and off course with your time in a day. Time is so valuable…it is the only thing that if you loose time – you can never find what your lost or make it up. If I lose one hour today – that is lost time tomorrow to try to make it up. Need to be alert and pay attention to time management!!

    Hi Danny

Great topic!! I just got back home from the conference. I noticed in my mastermind group lack of time was the main theme for everyone in our group. I am taking some time today to write down some goals and action items to get back on track after getting recharged from another great conference.

Danny I want to thank you for giving all of us at the conference your most valuable asset…your time. You are always upbeat and motivated through out the whole conference. I will try to repay you for your time spent by applying what you have shared.

It is always a pleasure to hear Craig Proctor at the conference and even better when I get the opportunity to have a conversation with Craig. It shows me that he is just another guy…but has mastered the art of time and marketing, and is nice enough to share his systems with everyone willing to listen.

Thanks Again for all your time at the conference and on the weekly Tuesday night calls.

Thanks to all of you that have taken the time to comment on this piece…it means a lot to me that we are hitting home with these Mojos! All I really ever wanted in return was for you to pass them along to those people that you care about!!

  • Danielle Miller

Amen to all of the above.
There are no words that can express how grateful I am for the opportunity to be able to learn from You and the others on Craig’s Coaching Team. But You are the one that was able to open my eyes on my biggest issue implementing all the great building blocks you all provide for my business, actually picking up the phone, crutial for success. Thank you will never be enough for how you were able to give insight in the problem between my ears. I am so grateful knowing that, if I slip at any time, I can count on you to be there to bring me back on the straight and narrow path. Happy Easter to you and your loved ones.

    Hi Danny,
Time management has been a major theme of your teaching since I can remember but this article puts it in very meaningful terminology. On a more simple note, I know that when I take the time to prepare a schedule of tomorrow’s activities and appointments today, I find I have tons of available time to actually handle 2-3 times the work load than if I didn’t do it. So much can happen so fast throughout the day that you can just simply “forget” to address everything if you don’t have it in writing. So I say, “schedule every day like it’s your last, and feel the freedom of all the extra time you’ll have to work On your business, not in it.”
