As If!

For imagination sets the goal picture which our automatic mechanism works on. We act, or fail to act, not because of will as commonly believed, but because of imagination. -Maxwell Maltz (1899-1975), a cosmetic surgeon and author who developed Psycho-Cybernetics, a self image improvement system.

As we have discussed, rationalizing away our potential successes can be absolutely deadly to our happiness and prevents us from ever becoming who we are really capable of being! But it still begs the question as to why we do this on a regular basis…why is this the norm and not the exception? After all, we do realize that this exists, so why can’t we just stop doing it, reverse course and begin to achieve our dreams…and I’m talking about really breaking through and not just doing a little bit better!

This week I was able to tap into some of the deep rooted frustrations of my coaching clients when I posed the question if anybody was really sick and tired of hearing a motivational speech about how they could get what they wanted if they only take this pill, that program, the next greatest technique! In the front row a hand flew in the air accompanied by a pained facial expression that indicated I had hit the bulls eye! But even though many people are diligent in their pursuit of knowledge, it seems that they still find themselves on a slippery slope!

Why!? It’s right there in front of us! Gurus and masters of anything and everything…why not just copy them…but we do you say…and I agree…you try with a martyr’s effort…yet you seem to miss the mark constantly! Well I think that I know why! And the good news is that it’s easy!

See the true masters have a simple understanding of the greatest tool in their arsenal…their subconscious mind! I’m not talking about anything that requires the help of a master coach or guru…just a simple technique that you can access today…right now! Although a discussion of the subconscious mind can conjure up visions of complicated systems of belief and deep rooted psychotherapy…I’m not going in that direction, even though those discussions intrigue me, the “how to” is actually simple!

Let’s consider dreams…amazing when you really think about it. They can be so vivid, colorful and real that they can provoke such a physical reaction that we awake in a sweat or go through the following day feeling like we have actually lived through the event…did you catch that…it feels as though we have actually lived through the event!! We are changed by the dream…emotionally, physically…inspired…or worse, even more deeply rooted in fear over the nightmare experience!

“But how can that be”, you ask yourself…”it’s not real”, you rationalize! But is that really accurate? Why is it not real? Isn’t everything we experience open to the interpretation of the mind? Don’t we store all experiences in pictures…tucked away in millions of psycho-folders in the subconscious…ready to be called upon to make sense of future experiences? By the way…what is “deja vu”…how does that even happen?

Well before we get away from the “how to”…so I don’t perpetuate the problem…I want to hammer home the fact that most experiences begin in the mind…a virtual movie that we construct before the “actual” event takes place…and YES that’s exactly where the problem is! We are simply creating the wrong movie! We are letting Mr. and Mrs. Fear edit the screen play! Mr Failure is the director! So why the heck are we hiring them to be involved at all?! This is our movie!

It’s time to fire them all and hire the right people! Who said we have to play the part of the “goat” in our own movie…I’m not playing the loser! Really think about how absurd the concept even sounds…”I’d like to try out for the local play and I’d prefer to play the loser”…is that cool? So now we’re getting somewhere…if you don’t want the part then simply re-write the script!

So back to the winners and how they do it…do you think any fantastic athlete envisions themself as the loser in the championship? Do you think any great politician has a picture of themselves losing the bid for the presidency? How about Lincoln whose loses and failures are legendary…did he ever give up on the vision of success? How do these winners do it?

Well why does it have to be any more complicated than dreaming…night dreams, day dreams it doesn’t matter at all…it’s the exercise that matters. The consistent writing and rewriting of the personal movie casting them as the winner. Yet like any winner, they too experience disaster, setback, pain and suffering yet they don’t go into the theatre of the mind and scratch a big red “X” across their self -image, fold tent and call it a day…rather they take the negative feedback at it’s face value…then they use it to course correct so they can help the hero of the mind win!

How incredible is that?! It’s like cheating! When’s the last time you went to a movie and wanted to scream at the screen and beg the stumbling fool to not go into that dark room…run away from the trap! Well what about sitting in your own theatre? Look up at your own screen and think about what you see…do you feel the urge to scream at the lead actor…by the way that’s YOU! But rather than scream, just rewrite the script before you stumble…simple isn’t it…because it really is!

Putting it all together you have to first clarify the target and understand what the movie is really about…start with the end result in mind…then start writing the script. Of course like any movie there will be extensive editing…yes mistakes that need to be cleaned up. Yet once this is all in motion remember that you are the lead actor or actress…so you must prepare! But I’ve never done this before you rationalize…”what if” I fail? STOP! Remember we have fired those trouble-making personal assassins! It’s time to practice by dreaming “as-if”  you have already won! Dream strong! Put the pictures together…holding the trophy…winning the race…getting what you want! Then once those pictures of success are implanted on the film in the brain, play them over and over again until you wire the body and mind to believe and the rest will simply play itself out like an Oscar winning thriller!

    Dan,

This really hits home. I wasn’t at the conference but I think I was that guy in the front row. Thanks for all your inspiration.

Loved this, Danny! Glad you worked out the technical difficulties as I wouldn’t have wanted to miss it.

    Danny:

You are so speaking my language this week. I have a new agent whom I am trying to get to do this very thing. I am reminded of the move “Run Away Bride” when Julia Roberts is gong for her 3 or 4th wedding and she is to marry a football coach. He tries to train her into seeing the goal line…”the alter”. He tells her not to take her eyes off of the goal which ultimately is the groom. As she walks down the isle, someone takes a picture, causing the groom to lose focus on the bride and the concentration or ultimate picture of the wanted end is disturbed. Hence, the bride runs away again. Someone needed to teach the coach “groom” to expect the unexpected yet be able to stay focused on the desired outcome.

Deja vu…I have experienced and it is almost an out of mind experience. You know you have seen, smelt, heard what you are around but when, and how. Why not take those feelings and pre-program them into your brain when you have a buyer sitting across from your desk? Why not when you are filling out those buyer forms, say to yourself, this feels very familiar? It should if you have rehearsed it enough in your mind prior to this buyer appointment.

Thanks Danny for confirming my way of thinking.

We are doing so much better than when Frank and I talked to you previously. We have had 28 leads already for the month of April and are strongly implementing follow up procedures as Craig teaches and we are prospering from it all.

    Thanks again,

    Mary

    Danny,

Thank you for this Mondays Motivation I really loved it! I am back to square one this week with having to remodel my compass for the week. I am one of those people you speak of who is constantly challenged by following the time slots throughout the day. I am going to try a different approach this week and do what you recommend with the Volume Breakdown Analysis and also do some free writing on what I really want as my end goal. Thanks!

Great stuff and I know it works. As an amateur thespian, once I “get into character” I become the person I am playing. Turning this around to my professional life seems as obvious as the nose on my face and yet I never really thought about it this way before. By playing the part and continually refining and understanding my character, I can become whatever I want to become professionally. Thanks for the insight.

    hi Danny,
I appreciate your insight, as always. Dreaming seems to be difficult for me as I focus diligently on my daily tasks. Having the end in mind makes a lot of sense to me, how can a person get where they are going if they don’t know where they want to be?

    Great post Danny –

I like the analogy of our potential/life being like a movie script and how we can not only hire the directors, but how we can rewrite the movie – That is the area that I need to work on – seeing the end of the movie (vision) and rewriting the script on how to get there – this really helped for today and gave me focus for the week.

I think DAWagner hit the nail on the head. “Pretending” is an important skill that is easy to loose as we mature. The way that we acquired most of our notions and beliefs (or “imagination” as Maltz would call it ), was by modeling and pretending when we were young. Young children spend a lot of time pretending and in doing so they shape who they will become.

Somewhere along the way “pretending” becomes “un-adult” and we can loose the facility to do what in actuality shaped us into what we are today. It only makes sense that, if we want to change, going back to what worked when we were younger stands a good chance of working again.

All that is necessary is to give oneself permission to pretend. Choose a good model (Craig comes to mind) and then pretend to be that model doing what that model does.

The great thing about giving oneself permission to pretend is that it does not threaten the not conscious part of the mind. The not conscious part of the mind says “Oh, that’s fine. Go ahead and play your silly little pretending game” and never realizes that you are mounting an all out assault on the notions and imaginings that it (the not conscious mind) holds so dear.

Purposeful pretending is a powerful tool for shaping your life. If it has been a while since you “played pretend”, you may find that it is difficult to do. Don’t give up. Put “Pretend time” on your daily schedule and keep at it. It not only works, it is fun!

Strong stuff Danny, but although I watched the secret over and over again and have been reading some of the Hicks books related to that, I am still having trouble with all this. Being convinced that with a lot of practice this has to work , since it has worked for so many great people including you, I still feel that being able to master your thoughts is one of the thoughest things in live. Is it as simple as you say it is? Can everyone acheeve this goal? Is practice over and over again only the answer to unlocking this major secret of our brain?

  • http://www.yoursalemagent.com David Nichols

    Hi Danny,

I really needed that one. I have been in a struggle ever since I signed up for the mastery program. A lot of what if’s. This is a rather scary part of my life because I’m getting farther in debt and my spouse isn’t seeing enough return yet to justify which scares me even more. But enough of that, thank you that one really hit home.

    Greetings From Sunny Texas Danny~

Love it!, Great Mojo! I can download it and listen in the car, for a quick reminder that all starts in your mind. You are the true Napoleon Hill of our Time! Thanks!

  • Danny Griffin

Danielle, I think you’re trying too hard. The key technique is to be in a relaxed state when you act “as if”…you have to reprogram when you are comfortable and relaxed. Rewiring can take time! Don’t overthink “where will I get the resources to change” just let it be…they will come to you! Practice! Be open!

Danny what a great job on this weeks Monday Morning MOJO. Having just returned from Dallas and having lots of energy I might add, I checked my mail box and there was a copy of Zero Resistance Selling. The first chpater…..dealing with call reluctnace hit me like a brick. And this great commentary by you helped ties it all togther.

    Thanks Coach!

    Hi Danny,

Bringing the audio is a good idea, especailly for non-native english speaking members like me. For some reason, it makes the comprehension of the text easier because of tonalities and music in your voice.

Looking forward hearing you again next week.
